Hands First Baby Sign - Benefits Of Signing

Benefits of Early Signing

Why Signing is Beneficial for Your Baby

At Hands First Baby Sign our number one goal is to reduce the frustration levels of your baby by giving them the tools to communicate their wants and needs to us. By teaching your baby how to sign they now have a way to tell us things which are of interest to them. Rather than pointing, crying and making hum, hum noises. This in return also boosts their confidence and self esteem because they are now empowered to talk and sign topics of interest to them. There is so much activity going on inside your baby's head all the different objects they see, emotions they feel, new and strange environments they encounter; signing gives us the ability to know specific thoughts, not to be guessing all the time what your baby would like to tell us, which can lead to frustration if we just are not getting it.

Sign language is a visual language and paired up with speech it gives the babies an object, or an action, feeling and expression to put together the concept of the word. All of these strong connections put together enhance speech development. Countless research and studies have been conducted and have without a doubt come to this conclusion.

Other studies have been conducted and have shown repeatedly that babies who sign out perform babies who did not have the added benefit of signing. I.Q scores have been on average 12 points higher on tests given to babies who sign. Language, mental, memory skills are more developed.

Vocabulary has been increased. Signing with your baby also keeps them entertained and interested in books, they are now involved in the reading process they can sign a picture of an animal, or object of interest to them, to you.

When signing to your baby he/she has to look at you, unlike talking, therefore babies who sign develop the communication skill of looking someone in the eyes while speaking. Being understood at a very early age will give them confidence and self esteem.

Let's not forget the most important benefit, spending quality time with your baby and the bonus is you will learn while having fun through books, nursery rhymes, playtime, songs and games. Enjoy, relax and have fun.
